There is something innately mesmerizing about model trains -- the symmetry of motion and clacking wheels -- coal-black trains, their whistles gently blowing, headlights flashing off the sides of Styrofoam tunnels. The railroading scene is as attractive to sixty-year olds as it is my first-grader.
